Creating and maintaining a healthy work-life balance is something that we often hear about. While we all want to strive to be the very best we can be professionally, we still want to dedicate time and attention to the other things in life that make us happy. This balance can be especially tricky to maintain when you not only work in the beauty industry, but you are a business owner as well.
In the spa and wellness industry, self care is monumental. In fact, it is pretty much the basis for what we do! Clients come to us to help them relax, disconnect from their busy lives, and just enjoy some pampering. The irony is that sometimes we as the technicians/owners forget to do that for ourselves. The truth is that in order to take care of others, we have to first understand how to take care of ourselves. When time isn’t in abundance, (especially if you have other responsibilities as a spouse and/or parent) strategizing on how to make your work-life balance is key.
I thought I knew what stress was in my life, but it took on a whole other meaning when I had our son! Never before had every single minute in every single day had a purpose. If it wasn’t working, it was feeding, bathing, and putting our son to sleep. If it wasn’t taking care of him, it was working on marketing, accounting, and planning for a busy day of appointments. Stack this all on top of a lot of sleepless nights with a baby, and it was a recipe for mental, emotional, and physical overload. I work best when I have a plan mapped out, so it was helpful to start planning for the week ahead. Sit down with your calendar and write out the major goals you have for the month, and break them down by week and by day. Set yourself reminders a couple days before each activity needs to be done, so that you won’t be stressing about getting it done at the last minute.
When you are a one-man or one-woman show, asking and accepting help is huge! If you are like me and have a tendency to want to do everything yourself, it’s time to get over it. Don’t be shy about asking a friend or a family member to help you organize some clutter in the office or help you answer phones a couple days a week. If you can find a way to barter time, maybe a colleague would be willing to come in and help you get your inventory organized and back on track. Work in some efficiencies to your current process, and once it becomes a well-oiled machine, you may even be able to add staff to help you as well.
Just like we advise our clients to practice self-care, we need to that ourselves. Take time out a few times a week to get outside for a walk and enjoy some fresh air. If you love going to the gym, make opportunities for yourself to slap on those headphones and just make it you and the treadmill for 45 minutes. If you give facials all day long at the spa, how about bartering with a colleague and enjoying a relaxing facial yourself? These precious moments of self-care are so important, and it may even help remind you why you love what you do.
