Come experience our yummy Blueberry Jessner Peel!

Come experience our yummy Blueberry Jessner Peel!

We are celebrating the arrival of Fall with a special on our Blueberry Jessner peel!  This peel is my absolute favorite for kicking up the peeling process a notch and doing some serious remodeling.

Let’s look at what the key ingredients are in this magical Jessner peel:

  1.  Salicylic acid is my ‘go-to’ ingredient when it comes to fighting blemishes.  This gentle but effective acid is great at sapping up extra oil and killing bacteria.
  2. Lactic acid is unique because it exfoliates and hydrates the skin at the same time.  Those with sensitive skin will love the smoothing effects.
  3. Blueberry extract is part of what makes this peel so yummy!  Blueberries are known for their powerful antioxidant properties, which work to bring life to lackluster skin.

It’s important to understand that undergoing a peel such as this requires some prior skin preparation.  You certainly don’t want to have a Bluebrry Jessner be your very first peel experience!  Since the depth of this peel is light-medium, it can take a few layers of skin off the surface.  In order to minimize shock to the skin, it’s best to have the skin familiar with deeper homecare exfoliation.  I always recommend that my clients be on a resurfacing ingredient such as retinol for at least 30 days prior to experiencing  their first Jessner peel.  Some great products I typically suggest are:

1.  Serum 24 contains a unique blend of LG-Retinex retinol complex, encapsulated retinol, and retinaldehyde.  Is that enough vitamin A for you?

2.  Refine RX dramatically exfoliates the skin with 12% AGP Retinol complex.

3.  X-Cell+ is my favorite tag team combination of brightening extracts and retinol.  This product is great for inhibiting melanin production and discouraging the appearance of skin discoloration.

The aftercare from our Blueberry Jessner peel is just as important as the preparation before the treatment.  SPF is absolutely mandatory in order to keep the fresh new skin protected.  You also want to avoid any excessive heat for the next few days, so that means avoiding hot showers, saunas, or strenuous exercise for the first 7 days post-peel.  Remember that taking off layers makes your skin more susceptible to damage, so it’s important to take extra good care of that baby skin!

Why get a monthly facial?

Why get a monthly facial?

I love when I am asked why people should bother to get a facial.    There are so many benefits to receiving regular skincare treatments that there is probably not enough lines in this post!  Let’s focus in on five key improvements you can witness in your skin after having a facial treatment.

  1.   Brightening: one of the first things I notice while doing a skin analysis is that many of clients have a buildup of dead skin.  Although we shed skin cells everyday, sometimes our skin needs some extra help.  Exfoliation = brightening in a facial because sloughing off dead or damaged cells on the surface forces the body to create fresh new skin.  You can expect an overall brightening affect from a facial as a result of either mechanical or chemical exfoliation.
  2. Softened texture:  run your fingertips over the surface of your skin.  Notice how some areas may feel bumpy or rough?  Peels are a fantastic way to gently and effectively even out your skin texture.  Smooth skin is also an ideal way to have your makeup set beautifully.  The more perfect the canvas, the better your makeup will look!
  3. Increased Hydration:  another key component of our skin analysis is to evaluate how much water is in your skin.  Clients are often shocked when their numbers are low because they drink a lot of water, but your skin’s hydration has more to do with it than that.  As a part of your facial, your esthetician can recommend the best serums and moisturizers to boost your hydration numbers.  These products can be used during your facial so you can realize the glow that increased hydration can bring your skin.
  4. Plumping:  the only plumping we like is the kind that ends up on our face and not our hips!  MicroChanneling is an excellent way to improve collagen production in the skin.  Think of collagen like a pillow top mattress – it is what gives our skin the perfect plump look like a baby.  Essentially, we are all trying to get back to that baby skin, and the more collagen production we have, the better.
  5. Relaxation: this is such an important part of getting a facial.  We often underestimate the stress that accumulates in our bones as a result of just living!  Our lives have so much demand, and sometimes we are so busy taking care of others, that we forget to take care of ourselves.  All of our facials come with massage for the decollete, face, arms, or scalp.  As humans, we really need time to truly relax and be in the moment of self care.

If you find yourself desiring one or more of the above improvements in your skin, come experience a facial!  We believe in truly listening to your skincare concerns and what your goals are.  Together, we can create a treatment plan that will help bring out the very best version of your skin.

Peel season is here!

Peel season is here!

Ah fall – the absolute best time of year!  I love the cooling temperatures, seeing leaves on the ground, and knowing that peel season has arrived. The reason it’s a better idea to have a brightening treatment or peel in the fall is because your skin is less likely to be exposed to heat and direct sunlight.  Fall is also a great time to reverse any surface sun damage (i.e. dark spots, congestion, buildup) that was caused during the summer.

I like to take a graduated approach to brightening treatments and peels because we never want to be too aggressive too fast.  Our skin is a delicate flower, and as such, it needs to build up strength to handle more advanced treatments.  Think of it like lifting weights at the gym – if you went too heavy too fast, your muscles would just be weak and you may even hurt yourself.  Rather, if you take a graduated approach and build strength, your results are lasting and evident.

Here is a breakdown of our peel levels and what each treatment can accomplish.

Level 1:  Brightening Enzyme treatment – a great introductory treatment that gently clarifies and corrects blemishes and gives the skin a youthful glow.

Level 2:  Benefit Treatment – this is like injecting vitamin C into your skin!  With high doses of ascorbic acid and vitamin A, this treatment is great for correcting pigmentation and sloughing off dead skin.

Level 3:  Purity Treatment – this is excellent for resurfacing congested pores, excess oil, and correcting blemish-prone skin.

Level 4:  Blueberry Jessner – this treatment dramatically resurfaces blemishes and lines for a smooth complexion.

Level 5:  Timeless -this age-defying peel boasts the highest concentrations of vitamin A and lactic acid so its fantastic for correcting lines/wrinkles and pigmentation.

Level 6:  Deep Sea  – this stimulating herbal peel uses mineral-rich marine actives to penetrate medium-depth and correct aged and damaged skin.

As you can see, each treatment takes a bolder step towards correcting the affects of acne, aging, and pigmentation.  Taking this graduated approach to skin care correction is a safe and effective way to get lasting results with peel treatments.

More info on MicroChanneling

More info on MicroChanneling

There has been such an overwhelming interest in our new MicroChanneling treatment, we decided it would be helpful to explain even more about the process.  This is definitely a more advanced aesthetic treatment, but is non-invasive all at the same time.  It has the ability to transform damage resulting from acne, scarring, sun damage, pigmentation, and stretch marks.  In order to break things down in a simpler fashion, check out these frequently asked questions regarding MicroChanneling:

  1. How does it work?-Our MicroChanneling stamping device creates micro perforations in the skin to stimulate the body’s wound healing response. We use a proprietary Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) serum to speed up the collagen production in the skin.
  2. Does it hurt? -This treatment is not painful, but may be uncomfortable for some. Some say MicroChanneling feels like a tiny hammer on your skin, and others compare it to microdermabrasion.
  3. How often do I have to do it? -Most clients only need to do a MicroChanneling series once and may choose to have maintenance down the road. This treatment is not intended to be done on a continual basis, but rather as needed.
  4. Do I have to use the aftercare products? -Use of our EGF serums is recommended, but not mandatory. These serums are the same as what is used during a MicroChanneling treatment, and have shown to accelerate results.
  5. What kind of results can I expect?-Results vary by individual, but you may experience redness/tightness immediately post-treatment. Irritation usually fades within hours-days, and you will start to notice a smoothing, brightening, and tightening effect on your skin in the days after treatment. Your body will be working on building collagen in response to the MicroChanneling treatment, so sometimes the most notable difference is 2-3 weeks after treatment.

If you can handle the feeling of tight skin and a mild sunburn for a few hours, MicroChanneling can really help to remodel skin damage that has been hanging around for years.  This YouTube video helps provide a visual of how the treatment works as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SLzk9-LctA.  Check out this awesome treatment!

What is microneedling about?

What is microneedling about?

Sounds kinda scary, doesn’t it?  At least that’s what I thought when I first heard about this treatment.  The reality is, however, that microneedling is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after esthetic treatments.  It is rivaling what more expensive treatments like fraxel laser can do at a fraction of the cost.  Microneedling is also considered non-invasive and has next to no downtime.  The key is to understand how it really works.

When microneedling first came out several years back, they created a roller.  This device employs several tiny needles that create little channels in the skin.  By creating these channels, it tricks your brain into thinking that the skin has been injured and that new skin needs to be produced.   You typically don’t feel the needles (think of acupuncture if you have ever experienced that), but you may feel the pressure of the device.  The trouble with the roller, however, is that it’s hard to keep consistent pressure so that the needles don’t go deeper than they should.  You also roll the same pattern over the skin, so it can be difficult to create more channels.

The next version of the device that came out is the microneedling pen. Then pen also employs several tiny needles (they can come at different lengths depending on the work being done) that are dragged across the skin.  The pen also creates tiny channels in the skin.  The trouble with the pen, however, is that it can also create tears in the skin because of how it is dragged across the surface.

The latest version (and best, in my opinion) of the microneedling device is the gun.  This device also employs very fine and very small needles, but they are at a fixed depth and area administered via a stamping method.  This prevents any tearing in the skin and also allows many more channels to be created by overlapping the treated areas.  So you can get the double the results with less risk and irritation.  This new treatment also employs the homecare use of 2 serums that contain Epidermal Growth Factors (EGFs) like stem cells which help to create and grow new collagen.  Creating collagen is how we get that perfect, plump, baby-like skin.

I experienced the stamping gun method last month at the International Esthetics & Cosmetics show in Las Vegas.  My philosophy is that I must experience a treatment first before administering to my lovely clients so that I can truly articulate what they can expect.  I have to admit I was a little nervous and started to sweat before we started!  I was surprised at how it did not hurt, but instead just felt like pressure being applied to my face.  Almost like a tiny vibrating hammer that stamps along your skin.  I have always had acne scarring on my cheeks from when I was a teenager that I have struggled to correct, so I was excited to see the results.  Immediately following the treatment, my skin was pink for about 5-10 minutes and then went away.  I have very sensitive and very reactive skin, so I was shocked and how quickly the redness disappeared.  Over the next several days, I could definitely see a lessening of my scarring thanks to the miconeedling treatment.  That was just one session, so I can only imagine what a few more would do.

I’m so excited to begin offering this awesome new treatment at Sweet Life!  The cool thing about microneedling is that it can treat a variety of skin conditions:  wrinkles, acne scarring, pigmentation, crow’s feet, and even stretch marks.  We will be offering these treatments in either single sessions, 3 sessions, or 5 sessions inclusive of the homecare serums.  Results are lasting and semi-permanent after just a handful of treatments, so you can enjoy a positive change in your skin in less time.  Come check it out!
