I’m a big believer in continuing education – it’s a great way to learn new things, see old things in a new way, and interact with people.  I love going to classes and networking with people that enjoy this industry just as much as I do!  So today I want to share with you some new and perhaps familiar information on aesthetic modalities that can have a positive affect on skin health.  As with any advanced treatments, contraindications ALWAYS apply, so you want to make sure that you are a good candidate before undergoing any of the below treatments.

  • Ultrasonic skin scrubber:  this is a handheld device that has a spatula shape and uses sound waves to vibrate and loosen dead skin cells off the surface of skin.  Picture the wings of a hummingbird beating back and forth really fast (thanks for that example, Dr. Erin)!  This is a great introduction to more advanced exfoliating techniques and is safe for most skin types.
  • LED:  this stands for ‘light emitting diode’ and works by using different wavelengths of infrared light.  The various color lights create different benefits for the skin.  For example, the red light is considered healing, the blue light is beneficial for acne, the green light for hyperpigmentation, and so on.
  • Microcurrent:  this machines uses a low electrical current to help tone and lift the facial muscles.  It is a non-invasive treatment that not only affects muscle tone, but also increases circulation and promotes the production of collagen and elastin.
  • Radio Frequency:  this method of treatment creates a thermal affect on the dermal level of the skin to soften wrinkles, fine lines, and stimulate collagen.  It can also be used on other parts of the body to decrease the appearance of dimpled or sagging skin.
