If someone were to ask me what one of the best feelings in the world is, I would say the massage portion of a really good facial.  There is something inexplicably relaxing about it.  It’s one of those things where you start out thinking ‘hey, this feels really good’ to waking up 10 minutes later and trying to remember where you are.  Human touch has an amazing ability to relieve tension and stress.  When that touch is made with care and compassion, it has an even greater ability to help us relax.

So what about touch really makes  us feel good?  Sir Henry Head was an English neurologist that studied the relationship between the skin and internal organs.  He found that when pressure was applied to the skin, the internal organs would respond.

William Fitzgerald was an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist  that took that concept a step further and created ‘Zone Therapy.’  He found that when pressure was applied to certain areas of the body, it could have a healing effect on other areas of the body that were diseased or in pain.

In 1932, Sir Charles Sherrington proved that the whole body will respond and adjust to a stimulus when applied to any part of the body.  He published a book known as ‘The Integrative Action of the Nervous System’ to support and define his ideas.  He won the Nobel Prize for his work.

So there really is something to being touched.  I remember watching a National Geographic movie in school that showcased a neo-natal intensive care unit.  The hospital partnered with an assisted living home and brought the residents in a few times a week to touch and hold the babies.  Many of the babies were extremely premature and had low odds of surviving.  What the hospital found was that the babies that were touched on a regular basis had a 50% increase of  health and survival than the babies that were not touched on a regular basis.  The act of connecting with those little babies fighting for life also ended up being therapeutic for the elderly folks, as well.  Many of them were away from family and friends, and having another human to connect with gave them something to look forward to and enjoy.  It was a successful representation of just how powerful the human touch is.

As human beings, we are programmed to  respond to touch when it brings positive energy.  It’s amazing what a deep hug or reassuring squeeze of the hand can do for us.  When that same sense of touch is channeled into the treatment room to target and relax certain muscles and pressure points, it can have a very calming effect on the entire body.  We have countless nerve endings in our face that can be stimulated and then soothed.  So you see, there are so many benefits to experiencing a facial and making it an integral part of your overall wellness.  Not only can it externally improve the health of your skin, but it may just make you feel better on the inside too.
